• Registrants requesting non SMPTE-controlled ULs (in Classes 13 & 14) may choose any version byte value they desire.
  • Two ULs which differ only in terms of their version byte are not allowed.
  • The Registers snapshots shall not have version numbers because this would be confusing: from the version byte of a UL alone it is not possible to say which snapshot of the Register in which the entry first appears.
  • What does the UL version byte tell you about a UL?
    • It tells you the “era” in which work begun on the Registers Submission that created the UL
  • Per AG-18, current version bytes are listed on the SMPTE Registration Authority website.
